† rakesn.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: rake n.8
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < the plural of rake n.8 (although this is first attested considerably later; with use in plural compare rake n.8 1) in unattested sense ‘excrement that has been scraped by hand from a constipated horse’ (compare rake v.2 8). It is noteworthy that the scene in Gammer Gurtons Nedle immediately following that from which quot. 1575 is drawn includes a humorous discussion on the subject of the raking a cat in this very sense:1575 W. Stevenson Gammer Gurtons Nedle iii. iv. sig. C.ivv Hodge. Holde vp har tayle and take her, Chil see what deuil is in her guts, chil take yu paines to rake her. Gamer. Rake a Cat Hodge, what woldst thou do?
