Forms: 1700s– rakia, 1900s– rakija, 1900s– rakiya.
Origin: A borrowing from Serbian and Croatian. Partly also a borrowing from other Balkan languages. Etymon: Serbian and Croatian rakija.
Etymology: < Serbian and Croatian rakija ( < Turkish rakı raki n.), apparently originally via Italian rakia (1784 in the passage translated in quot. 1778). In later use also < its equivalent in other Balkan languages, e.g. Bulgarian rakija , Macedonian rakija , and Albanian rakia (definite form of raki raki n.); compare also Romanian rachiu . Compare earlier raki n.
A type of colourless spirit in the Balkans distilled from various ingredients, including grape pomace and plums, and often flavoured with herbs or other aromatics. Cf. raki n.
