Etymology: < German Rappen (Middle High German rappen , rappe , originally a monetary unit of south-west Germany and northern Switzerland (also in rappenpfennig ), spec. use of Middle High German rappe raven n.1, on account of the image of a bird (originally an eagle) on the back of the coin). With quot. 1688 compare German †rappenmünze (16th cent.).
A monetary unit of Switzerland and Liechtenstein, since 1799 equivalent to one-hundredth of a Swiss franc; a coin of this value.Rappen is the name used in German-speaking cantons of Switzerland and in Liechtenstein; in other linguistic communities the unit is known as the centime (French), centesimo (Italian), or rap (Romansh).
