Etymology: Origin unknown. N.E.D. (1903) derives the word < an English regional noun rawk , which it glosses as ‘gum (of the eye), slime’ (of unknown origin; connection with roke n.1 as well as roke n.2 seems unlikely on semantic grounds), but no independent evidence for such a word has been found.
Obsolete. rare.
