单词 ram-stam
释义

ram-stamadj.adv.n.

Brit. /ramˈstam/, /ˈramstam/, U.S. /ˌræmˈstæm/, /ˈræmˌstæm/, Scottish English /ramˈstam/, /ˈramstam/, Irish English /ræmˈstæm/, /ˈræmstæm/
Forms: Scottish 1700s– ram-stam; English regional (east midlands and northern) 1800s ram-stram (Northamptonshire), 1800s– ram-stam; Irish English (northern) 1800s– ram-stam.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps partly formed within English, by derivation. Perhaps partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: English ram- , stam ; ram v.1, stam v.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < Scots ram-, intensifying prefix (see ramfeezled adj.) + stam to walk with a quick heavy tread (although this is first attested later: 1825; shortened < stammer v. (compare stammer v. 3)); compare earlier ram-tam adv. In English regional (south-east midland) use (see note) apparently of different origin: perhaps < ram v.1 + stam v.; compare English regional (Cornwall) stam-bang (adverb) headlong (attested from 1846 onwards). The distribution of the word is unusual: Eng. Dial. Dict. (at cited word) records it widely from Scotland, northern Ireland, and Northumberland, but also in a couple of apparently isolated examples from the south-east midlands (Bedfordshire (see quot. 1809 at sense A.) and Northamptonshire (1851 as ram-stram)).
Chiefly Scottish and Irish English (northern).
