(The name of) one of the two major ancient Hindu epics, written in Sanskrit and ascribed to the poet Valmiki. Cf. Mahabharata n.The poem describes how Rama, aided by his brother Laksmana and the monkey Hanuman, rescued his wife Sita from Ravana, the ten-headed demon king of Lanka. The basic story seems to have evolved by c300  b.c.e., but was expanded upon in later centuries. In much of the supplementary text, Rama is represented as an avatar of Vishnu.
