Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements; probably partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: ramus n., -i- connective, Latin cornū.
Etymology: < ramus n. + -i- connective + classical Latin cornū horn (see corn n.2). In use as adjective in entomological sense probably after scientific Latin Ramicornes, name of a tribe of Hemiptera (1843); compare scientific Latin ramicornis, adjective (1781 as a specific name), French ramicorne, adjective (1869–70 in Littré).

Ornithology. A part of the horny sheath of a bird's bill that covers the lower part of the lower mandible (either one on each side, or fused into a single piece).
