Etymology: < Malay ramin.

Any of several trees of the tropical genus Gonystylus (family Thymelaeaceae), esp. G. bancanus, of peat swamp forests of South-East Asia, esp. Indonesia and Malaysia; (also) the valuable light-coloured hardwood obtained from this tree. Frequently attributive.The tree is now scarce throughout much of its original range due to over-exploitation for commercial purposes.
