Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from Afrikaans. Probably also partly a borrowing from Nama. Etymons: Dutch ramkie; Afrikaans ramkie; Nama ramgi-b.
Etymology: < South African Dutch ramkie and (in later use) its Afrikaans reflex ramkie, ultimately < Portuguese rabequinha small fiddle < rabeca fiddle (see rebec n.) + -inha , diminutive suffix (see -ine suffix4); in early use probably partly via Nama ramgi-b. Compare South African Dutch rabekin (1773), ramakienjo (1800).
South African.
A guitar-like instrument, formerly played by the Khoekhoe peoples of South Africa, consisting of three or four strings stretched out along a board, at one end of which is a gourd resonator on which the bridge is placed. Also (in later use): a home-made guitar with a rectangular oil-can for a resonator.
