Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin rationat-, rationari.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin rationat-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of rationari to reason (from 13th cent. in British sources; compare earlier rationare to count, reckon (9th cent.)) < classical Latin ratiōn- , ratiō ratio n. Compare rationative adj.
Now rare.
intransitive. To reason; to ratiocinate. Occasionally transitive.
