Of or belonging to the order Struthioniformes (formerly the group Ratitae), which comprises flightless birds characterized by a sternum that lacks a keel for the attachment of flight muscles. Opposed to carinate.The group includes the ostrich, rheas, emu, cassowaries, and kiwis, and the extinct moas and elephant birds. These are sometimes placed in different orders, and in some schemes the name Ratitae is still used for a higher grouping that comprises the ratite orders.
