单词 ratite
释义

ratiteadj.n.

Brit. /ˈratʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈræˌtaɪt/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin ratis , -ite suffix2.
Etymology: < classical Latin ratis raft, of unknown origin + -ite suffix2, after scientific Latin Ratitae, group name (B. Merrem in Abhandlungen Akad. der Wissensch. Berlin 1812–13: Physikalische Klasse (1816) 259), so called with reference to the flat shape of the sternum. Compare French ratites , plural noun (1834), and also classical Latin ratītus (of a coin) bearing the figure of a raft. Compare carinate adj.
Ornithology.
A. adj.
Of or belonging to the order Struthioniformes (formerly the group Ratitae), which comprises flightless birds characterized by a sternum that lacks a keel for the attachment of flight muscles. Opposed to carinate. The group includes the ostrich, rheas, emu, cassowaries, and kiwis, and the extinct moas and elephant birds. These are sometimes placed in different orders, and in some schemes the name Ratitae is still used for a higher grouping that comprises the ratite orders.
