Etymology: < the genitive of ram n.1 + head n.1 So called on account of the resemblance of the various plants and objects so named to the head of a ram. With sense 1a compare classical Latin cicer arietīnum (Pliny) and slightly earlier ram-ciche n. at ram n.1 Compounds 2. With senses 2 and 3 compare ram-head n. 1.The word is attested earlier as a surname: Johannes Rammesheved (1306).
