Etymology: Apparently < ran-tan v. (although the relevant sense is first attested slightly later) + -ing suffix1. Compare earlier ran-tan int.
English regional (northern and midlands). Now historical.
The practice of subjecting a husband to public condemnation and humiliation for beating his wife, typically by causing a disturbance outside his house by beating pots and kettles, singing and chanting loudly, etc.; an instance of this. See ran-tan v. 2.

1865 Reliquary 5 14 This system of rough legislation, called ‘rantanning’, if not always successful in curing offenders, no doubt was occasionally useful, in deterring others.
