单词 rancellor
释义

rancellorn.

Brit. /ˈrɑːnsələ/, /ˈransələ/, U.S. /ˈrænsələr/, Scottish English /ˈransələr/
Forms: pre-1700 rancellar, pre-1700 ranceller, pre-1700 1800s rancellor, pre-1700 1900s– ranseller, 1800s ranzelar, 1800s ranzellaar, 1800s– ransellor.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: rancel v., -or suffix.
Etymology: < rancel v. + -or suffix. With the forms in -er compare -er suffix1. Compare earlier rancelman n.The form rauzellaar in quot. 1821 is a typographical error, corrected in later editions to ranzellaar. On the basis of the latter spelling, N.E.D. (1903) suggested a Dutch origin of the word, but no corresponding word exists in Dutch, and the spelling appears to be due to Scott's fancy.
Scottish (Orkney and Shetland). Now historical.
= rancelman n.
