Etymology: < American Spanish ranchera genre of Latin American country music (although this is apparently first attested later: c1930), short for canción ranchera (although this is apparently first attested later: c1932 or earlier; compare ranchera canción (c1930 or earlier, rare)) < canción song (see canzone n.) + ranchera , feminine of ranchero of, characteristic of, or belonging to a ranch (early 19th cent.) < rancho rancho n. + -ero -ary suffix1.
Music.
A genre of traditional Latin American music typically played with guitars and brass instruments; a song of this type.
