Etymology: < -rang- (in orangutan n.), with final -a intended to represent an unstressed final syllable; so used with allusion to the reddish hair of the animal.
Australian colloquial (often derogatory).

2003 Sydney Morning Herald 1 Oct. 3/2 Ranga (Perth): A person with red hair, male or female. Believed to be derived from orang-utan, but is not derogatory.
