A classical dance form originating in Southern India, traditionally performed by a solo dancer with instrumental and sometimes vocal accompaniment, and consisting of rhythmic, expressive, and narrative elements. In the 1930s it was reinvented as Bharatanatyam (Tamil paratanāṭṭiyam).
