Etymology: < (i) Hindi bhelpūrī, and its etymons (ii) Gujarati bheḷpurī and (iii) Marathi bheḷpurī < bheḷ mixture ( < Prakrit bhel- to mix, of unknown origin) + purī puri (cognate with Hindi pūrī puri n.¹).The dish apparently originated in the Mumbai area, where Gujarati and Marathi are spoken.

In Indian cookery: a dish or snack typically consisting of puffed rice, onions, potatoes, and spicy and sweet chutneys, sometimes served on a puri.
