Etymology: Shortened < raspberry n. Compare razz v. and razzing n. Compare slightly later razzberry n., and earlier razoo n.2 and razzo n.The following shows shortening of raspberry n. as rasp, with the same meaning:1917 Atlantic Dec. 782/2 When he called a failing candidate into the orderly room and implied that a resignation would be in order, that lost soul was known the company over as ‘getting the raspberry’, or ‘rasp’.
