Etymology: < rear adj.2 + front n.Quot. 1438 at sense 1 could alternatively be interpreted as showing an (apparently otherwise unrecorded) formation in Anglo-Norman.
1. Christian Church. A covering for the wall at the back of an altar. Cf. front n. 9b, reredos n. Obsolete. rare.

1802 C. James New Mil. Dict. (at cited word) When a battalion, troop, or company is faced about, and stands in that position, it is then said to be rear front.
