Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin reclinatorium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin reclinatorium something on which to recline, couch (Vulgate) < classical Latin reclīnāt- , past participial stem of reclīnāre recline v. + -ōrium -ory suffix1. In form reclynatoire after Middle French reclinatoire object on which one leans, sort of half seat on which one prays (1374), (in figurative use) place where one rests (15th cent.).
Obsolete.
1. Something on which to recline; a couch. Also figurative.In quot. ?a1439: (perhaps) a room affording rest or privacy.
