Forms: see re- prefix and encounter n.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, encounter n.
Etymology: < re- prefix + encounter n., in sense 1 after Middle French rencontre rencounter n. Compare slightly earlier rencounter n. and later rencontre n., which show semantic overlap with this word, and slightly earlier re-encounter v.In quot. 1611 at sense 2, Florio appears to give an etymologizing gloss of Italian †rancontro, variant of rincontro encounter, meeting (a1292); the senses ‘renewed meeting’, etc., are apparently not paralleled in Italian.
1. An encounter or confrontation, esp. a hostile one. Cf. rencounter n. 1. Now archaic and rare.
