Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French recenser; Latin recēnsēre.
Etymology: < Middle French, French recenser to enumerate (13th cent. in Old French in an apparently isolated attestation; subsequently from the 16th cent., but rare before late 18th cent.; a1230 in Old French in sense ‘to tell, narrate’) and its etymon classical Latin recēnsēre to make a review of, enumerate, count, in post-classical Latin also to revise (a text) (4th–5th cent.; < re- re- prefix + cēnsēre cense v.2). Compare later recension n.
transitive. To enumerate; to examine, review; spec. (now only) to revise (a text).
