单词 rebeat
释义

rebeatv.

Brit. /ˌriːˈbiːt/, U.S. /riˈbit/
Inflections: Past tense rebeat; past participle rebeaten, (regional and nonstandard) rebeat;
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, beat v.1
Etymology: < re- prefix + beat v.1, probably partly (in sense 1) after Middle French rabattre rebate v.1, and partly (in sense 2) after French rebattre to beat again (a1190 in Old French; < re- re- prefix + battre batter v.1).Since in many varieties of speech in the late 16th and 17th centuries the reflexes of Middle English ā and open ē had merged, sense 1 could perhaps be explained as a spelling variant of rebate v.1 by association with beat v.1
1. transitive. To beat or drive back; to repel, repulse. Cf. rebate v.1 1e, 1b. Obsolete.In quot. a16352 perhaps ‘to blunt’: cf. rebate v.1 3.
