Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French rachat.
Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman and Middle French rachat ransom, repurchase (a1180 in Old French; < racheter to buy again, to buy more of (c1135), (of God) to save, redeem (first half of the 12th cent. in Anglo-Norman), to liberate a person by paying a ransom (c1165) < re- re- prefix + acheter achate v.), with remodelling of the ending after purchase n. Compare post-classical Latin racatum, racheta, rachetum, rechata, rechatum repurchase, redemption (from 12th cent. in British sources).
Obsolete. rare.
