Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, chant v.
Etymology: < re- prefix + chant v., perhaps after either French rechanter to sing in turn (c1240 or earlier in Anglo-Norman in transitive use; c1195 in Old French in intransitive use; now only transitive), to sing again (first half of the 14th cent.) or classical Latin recantāre (see recant v.1). Compare recant v.1 7.
transitive. To chant again or in reply; to repeat in chanting. Also intransitive.
