Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Adephaga.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Adephaga (1816 or earlier; earlier in form Adephagi ( J. P. de Clairville Entomologie helvétique II. (1806) 3; compare post-classical Latin adephagus (1562 or earlier)) < ancient Greek ἀδηϕάγος voracious ( < ἄδην enough (ultimately < the same Indo-European base as sad adj.) + -ϕαγος : see -phagous comb. form) + scientific Latin -a -a suffix2. Compare French adephages (also 1806 in de Clairville).
Entomology.
With plural agreement. A suborder of the Coleoptera comprising chiefly predatory beetles, including the large ground beetle family ( Carabidae) and several aquatic families (cf. Polyphaga n.); beetles of this suborder (collectively or individually).By some 19th-cent. authors used only for the terrestrial members of this suborder (cf. quot. 1853).

1825 Zool. Jrnl. 2 260 To the former, or normal group, which corresponds with the Adephaga of Clairville, are assigned, 1. the Geodephaga, the type of which is Carabus, and 2, the Hydradephaga, having for its type Dytiscus.
1853 Trans. Amer. Philos. Soc 10 364 I have been led to select other characters than those usually adopted for the division into Adephaga and Hydradephaga, which depend on the form of the feet.
