In quot. 1755 after Italian recitatore person who recites verses (a1571; earlier in senses ‘narrator’ and ‘actor’ (both first half of the 14th cent.)).The following quot. occurs in a discussion of the use of classical Latin recitāre and its derivatives in Latin authors, and therefore probably shows classical Latin recitātōrēs, plural, rather than an English plural form in -es:1599 J. Rainolds Overthrow Stage-playes 139 Horace and persius doe scoffe bitterly at recitatores also.
A person who recites; a reciter.
