Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin adeps.
Etymology: < classical Latin adeps animal fat, lard, grease, perhaps < a form in an Italic language (compare Umbrian ařipes, dative plural), perhaps in turn < ancient Greek ἄλειϕα oil, fat.
Medicine and (in later use) Pharmacology. Now rare.
Animal fat; lard. In early use also: †adipose tissue, esp. that located beneath the skin (obsolete).
