Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: re- prefix, caption n.
Etymology: < re- prefix + caption n. Compare post-classical Latin recaptio taking back of property seized in distraint (1284, 15th cent. in British sources), recapture (1298, c1400 in British sources), withholding, deduction (1420 in a British source).

b. A writ issued in favour of a person who has been distrained twice, and requiring the return of the distrained goods. Usually more fully as writ of recaption. Now historical and rare.
