Etymology: < French †reconnoissance, variant of reconnaissance (see recognizance n., and also senses at reconnaissance n.). Compare earlier recognizance n. and, in sense 3, reconnaissance n.In sense 3 reconnaissance n. is attested earlier, but the form reconnoissance is the first recorded in English dictionaries, being given by Webster in 1847 (with a reference to Penny Cycl. (1841) XIX. 329).
