Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, animate v.
Etymology: < re- prefix + animate v., probably after either post-classical Latin reanimare (6th cent.; compare earlier redanimare (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian)) or French réanimer, ranimer to return to life (1549 as réanimer), to restore to life (1550 as réanimer, a1573 as ranimer), to give fresh courage to (1601 as ranimer).
1. transitive. To animate with new life, to make alive again; to restore to life or consciousness. Also figurative.
