Etymology: < re- prefix + answer v.In branch I. the prefix seems pleonastic and the formation was probably influenced by reply v. and classical Latin respondēre, French répondre (see respond v.). answer v. was in fact originally formed with a prefix of similar meaning (see and- prefix), but had long been unanalysable by the 16th cent.
