Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin recordativus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin recordativus commemorative (from 3rd cent. as a technical term in grammar; from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin recordāt- , past participial stem of recordārī record v.1 + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Middle French, French †recordatif (1546), Spanish †recordativo (15th cent.).
Originally: †commemorative (obsolete). In later use more generally: of or relating to recording (in various senses); that records.
