Etymology: < red adj. + bait n.1 In sense 1 after Afrikaans rooiaas rooi aas n.; in sense 2 after whitebait n.
1. South African. A large, solitary sea squirt (ascidian), Pyura stolonifera, widespread off rocky shores in the southern hemisphere, the orange-red internal organs of which are used as bait by anglers. Cf. cunjevoi n. 2.
