Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, decrease v., increase v.
Etymology: < re- prefix + -crease (in either decrease v. or increase v.), after either classical Latin recrēscere to grow again ( < re- re- prefix + crēscere to grow: see crescent adj.) or Middle French recroistre (French recroître) to grow again, increase (12th cent. in Old French; also transitive in Middle French, to increase (something); compare Anglo-Norman recrestre, rescrestre). Compare Old Occitan recreiser, Catalan recréixer (1490), Spanish recrecer (13th cent.), Portuguese recrescer (1275 as recrecer), Italian ricrescere (a1320).
Obsolete. rare.
