Etymology: < post-classical Latin rectificatorium (1533) < rectificat- , past participial stem of rectificare rectify v. + classical Latin -ōrium -ory suffix1. Compare later rectificatory adj.The description given by Sebastian Münster in his Horologiographia (1533) 98 is: ‘Voco autem rectificatorium, instrumentum triangulare orthogonium, formam habens scaleni, cuius latus breuius basis, medium cathetus, longius vero hypotenusa dicitur’, ‘I call a rectificatory an instrument in the form of a scalene right-angled triangle, the shorter side of which is called the base, the middle one the perpendicular and the longer one the hypotenuse’. A figure of the instrument is given on p. 100 of the same work.
Obsolete. rare.
A mathematical instrument used in the construction of dials, having the form of a scalene, right-angled triangle.
