Etymology: < classical Latin rectrīx female ruler or controller, in post-classical Latin also abbess (7th cent.), female rector of a parish (1291, 1342 in British sources), (queen) regent (1513 in a British source), type of feather (1637) < rect- , past participial stem of regere to rule, govern (see regent adj.) + -trīx -trix suffix. Compare Middle French rectrice female ruler, governor, or controller (16th cent.). Compare directrix n.
1. Probably: a nun who leads or directs a choir. Obsolete. rare.
