Etymology: < the name of Johann Christian Reil (1759–1813), German anatomist, who described the structure in 1809 ( Arch. f. Physiol. 9 144). With island of Reil n. compare German Reil'sche Insel and scientific Latin insula Reilii (both 1859 or earlier).
