Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin recumbere.
Etymology: < classical Latin recumbere to lie down, recline < re- re- prefix + -cumbere to lay oneself (only attested in compounds: see cumbent adj.). Compare Middle French recomber (intransitive) to extend (15th cent.), (reflexive) to rely or depend (on someone) (early 16th cent. in apparently isolated use). Compare earlier recumbent adj., recumbentibus n., recumbence n., recumbency n.
intransitive. To lean, recline, rest. In early use chiefly figurative: †to rely, depend on or upon God or Christ; cf. recumbency n. 2 (obsolete).
