单词 redely
释义

redelyadv.

Forms: early Middle English readeliche (south-west midlands), Middle English reddely, Middle English redeli, Middle English redeliche, Middle English redelyche, Middle English redelye, Middle English–1600s redely, late Middle English redele, late Middle English redelich, late Middle English rydely; Scottish pre-1700 redely, pre-1700 redelye, pre-1700 rydely.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: redly adv.1; i-redly adv.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Probably partly a variant of redly adv.1, and partly aphetic < i-redly adv. In early use occasionally difficult to distinguish from radly adv. In later use often difficult to distinguish from redily adv. (in senses 2 and 4) and also from readily adv. (in sense 3).The present word and the adverbs listed above show considerable semantic overlap and may have influenced each other in form and meaning. The medial vowel e in redely adv. probably originally reflects the medial vowel in Old English gerǣdelīce i-redly adv. (it is clearly pronounced and not silent in e.g. quots. a1393 at sense 2, a1393 at sense 3). However, it was perhaps later confused with a form of -y suffix1, phonologically weakened in medial position in redily adv. (and also in readily adv.). In cases where the assignment of quots. is ambiguous, the following graphic criteria have been followed: forms without a medial vowel have been placed at redly adv.1, forms with -e- have been placed at redely adv., and forms with -i- , -y- have been placed at redily adv. Quot. a1250 at sense 1 is taken by Middle Eng. Dict. at Radlī adv. as showing a south-west midland form of radly adv. However, the sense ‘clearly, distinctly’ (an interpretation supported by the variant reading witerliche witterly adv.) is not expected for radly adv.
Obsolete.
1. Clearly, plainly, distinctly.
