释义

redemptorn.

Brit. /rᵻˈdɛm(p)tə/, U.S. /rəˈdɛm(p)tər/, /riˈdɛm(p)tər/
Forms: late Middle English redemptoure, late Middle English redemptowr, late Middle English redemptur, late Middle English redempture, late Middle English–1500s redemptour, late Middle English–1600s 1800s– redemptor; also Scottish pre-1700 redempteur, pre-1700 redemptore, pre-1700 redemptour.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French redemptur; Latin redemptor.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman redemptur Christ, as redeemer (second quarter of the 13th cent. or earlier; compare in same sense Old French redemptor (end of the 10th cent. in an isolated attestation), Middle French redempteur , French rédempteur (early 14th cent.; 1721 in sense ‘Trinitarian’)) and its etymon classical Latin redemptor contractor, person who buys up rights dependent on the outcome of a lawsuit, ransomer, in post-classical Latin also God or Christ as redeemer (Vetus Latina), Trinitarian (a1536) < redempt- , past participial stem of redimere redeem v. + -or -or suffix. Compare Catalan redentor (14th cent.), Spanish redentor (beginning of the 13th cent.), Portuguese redentor (1485 as †rredentor ), Italian redentore (13th cent.). Compare ransomer n., redeemer n., and (with sense 2) slightly earlier redemptionist n. 2.The more usual noun in Old French was raembeeur, raiembeor person who saves another or others from sin or damnation, (spec.) God or Christ (13th cent.), which shows the regular phonological development of the Latin etymon (as opposed to a later borrowing). The following should probably be taken as showing the Latin noun (in its application to Christ) in an English context:c1400 (c1378) W. Langland Piers Plowman (Laud 581) (1869) B. xi. 201 After his resurreccioun Redemptor was his name.
