Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Chinese lexical item. Etymons: red adj., button n.
Etymology: < red adj. + button n., after Chinese hóng dǐngzi coral button indicating the first and second ranks of the Qing bureaucracy < hóng red + dǐngzi rank button (also dǐngdài ; < dǐng crown of the head + dài to wear; compare zi , diminutive suffix). Chinese zǒngbīng (compare quot. 1919 at sense B.) denotes a particular one of the these ranks.
