Sport (originally Association Football).
1. A red card shown by the referee to a player to indicate that he or she is being sent off the field for foul play. Hence also: the dismissal signified by such a card. Cf. yellow card n. 3.Red cards were first introduced for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.
