Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman abober, abbobber, Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French abaubir to astonish, astound, frighten (late 12th cent.) < a- a- prefix5 + baup (c1180), baube (1245) stuttering, stammering < classical Latin balbus stammering (see balbutient adj.).
