Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: English Red Federationist.
Etymology: Shortened < Red Federationist (1912) < red adj. + federationist n., after Red Federation (1912 or earlier), popular name of the New Zealand Federation of Labour. Compare earlier (in slightly different sense) Fed n.1
New Zealand colloquial.
Originally: a member of the New Zealand Federation of Labour (founded in 1909). In later use (colloquial): a person who rebels against the established order; a left-winger.
