单词 red kaffir
释义

Red Kaffirn.

Brit. /ˌrɛd ˈkafə/, U.S. /ˌrɛd ˈkæfər/
Forms: see red adj. and n. and Kaffir n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: red adj., Kaffir n.
Etymology: < red adj. + Kaffir n., after South African Dutch roode Kaffer (although this is apparently first attested slightly later: see quot. 1824; a1838 as rooikaffer ; Afrikaans rooi Kaffer ). In sense (a), denoting the Thamakga people, the first element probably reflects a Northern Sotho word: compare thamakga (of cattle) red with a white back. In sense (b) on account of the red ochre traditionally smeared on the body and clothes.
Now offensive.
In South Africa: (a) a member of the Thamakga people of the Tswana group (b) a member of a Xhosa people in which it is traditional to smear the body and clothes with red ochre; see also Kaffir n. 2a.
