Etymology: < red adj. + rattle n.1, after Dutch roode ratel (1554 in the passage translated in quot. 1578).
Any of various semi-parasitic plants of the genus Pedicularis (family Scrophulariaceae); esp. either of two European species, (more fully marsh red rattle, tall red rattle) P. palustris, a crimson-flowered plant of marshes and wet meadows, and (more fully dwarf red rattle, †red rattle grass) P. sylvatica, a dwarf, pink-flowered plant of damp heaths and pastures.Plants of this genus are also called lousewort.
