Etymology: < red adj. + -ling suffix¹.Earlier currency of the word is perhaps implied by the apparent Old English ethnonym Redlingas Ethiopians (one isolated attestation):lOE Canterbury Psalter lxvii. 32 Venient legati ex egypto ethyopia preveniet manus eius deo : cumæð erendracen of egiptum & redlingum forecymð hand his gode.However, the Latin has clearly been misunderstood by the glossator, and emendation (of redlingum to wedlingum) has been tentatively proposed by A. Campbell in his Supplement to Bosworth-Toller (1972).
