Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin redonation- , redonatio ; re- prefix, donation n.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin redonation-, redonatio restitution (11th cent.) < classical Latin redonāt- , past participial stem of redonāre redonate v. + -iō -ion suffix1; compare -ation suffix. Compare Middle French redonation (late 15th cent.), and earlier donation n. In later use probably independently < re- prefix + donation n.
Now rare.
The action or process of giving something back; an instance of this.
